Big Brothers Big Sisters Fact Sheet
Community-Based: In the Community-Based program, enjoyable activities are shared ranging from crafts to sports, reading to fishing, cooking to movies. Volunteers coordinate plans with the parent/guardian and pick up the child at their home for these outings. Volunteers commit to getting together with the child at least twice a month.
School-Based: In the School-Based program, volunteers visit their Little Brother/Sister for one hour each week at the child's school. Matches work on homework, eat lunch together, play games, enjoy crafts, or simply talk. Contact is limited to the school facility.
Match Support: In both the Community-Based and School-Based programs, professional staff recruit, enroll, interview, train and provide on-going case management for volunteers, parents and youth. BBBS maintains contact with all parties of the match on a monthly basis during the first year of the match and quarterly thereafter. Staff is always available to address questions or concerns, acting as a liaison between volunteer, parent/guardian and the child.
History: BBBS of Carroll Co. came into full operation in 2010 as a local satellite affiliate (one of over 500 across the country) of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America under the sponsorship and board of the BBBS of Jefferson County, IN, along with an advisory board of Carroll County, KY.
Who Do We Serve? BBBS serves at-risk youth(ages 6-18) from primarily single-parent homes. Youth are referred by parents/guardians, schools and social service agencies. Our clients come from many types of home environments and family structures and from different socio-economic levels. The children's personalities and backgrounds are unique, but they all have a need for a friendship with a caring adult.
